Frequently Asked Questions - Scholarship Program

Who is eligible to apply?

General scholarship program: Sons, daughters, or other legal dependents of active or retired (non-deceased) CHP employees, uniformed and non-uniformed, are eligible to apply for our general scholarship program. Applicants must be currently attending or planning to attend a post-secondary institution (college, university, or trade/technical school). Please see eligibility requirements for further details.

Fallen Hero scholarship program: Sons, daughters, spouses or other legal dependents of CHP officers killed in the Line of Duty (as listed on the official Fallen Heroes page on the CHP's web site) are eligible to apply for our Fallen Hero scholarship program. ​How do I apply?

You must apply online through our scholarship application link during the application period. We only accept online applications - no paper applications.

When does the CHP 11-99 Foundation begin accepting applications?

The application period opens on January 15 of each year. 

When is the deadline to submit my scholarship application?

March 15 is the deadline to submit your online scholarship application, and you have until April 15 for us to receive your official transcript.

How will my award be disbursed if I am awarded a scholarship?

Once we have received and verified your proof of enrollment documentation, we will issue your award check and mail it to you.

Is my scholarship renewable?

No - you must re-apply each year in order to receive another award for the next school year.

What will I need when I am filling out my scholarship application?

Contact info for applicant and CHP employee, as well as CHP employee ID and their official authorization/consent, financial and/or income information from previous year and current year for applicant and parent(s) or guardian(s), and your official transcript showing current GPA and enrollment information.

How is my application scored and who scores it?

Your application is scored based upon academic performance (GPA) and financial need. Award decisions are made by the CHP 11-99 Foundation scholarship committee. Award amounts vary from year to year, and are dependent upon total funds allocated and available to the scholarship program.

When will I be notified about the status of my application?

You will be notified by the end of June via email or letter whether or not you have been awarded a scholarship.
