Officer Sean Nava was hit and killed by a drunk driver while investigating an earlier collision on Interstate 5 near Carlsbad in San Diego County. He was taking measurements in the center divider when the suspect vehicle, traveling approximately 75 mph, struck him, causing fatal injuries. The suspect was actually using the paved center median to pass another vehicle traveling in the fast lane, when his vehicle struck Officer Nava. Officer Nava was 33 years old and an 11-year veteran of the CHP. The driver fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later by the Carlsbad Police Department. He was charged with second degree murder and is currently in custody awaiting trial.
