On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at approximately 1744 hours, South Sacramento Area motorcycle Officer Lucas Forrest Chellew, ID 19402, was in pursuit of a motorcycle eastbound on Fruitridge Road, east of State Route 99. During the pursuit, a collision occurred, forcing Officer Chellew to lose control of his motorcycle. Officer Chellew suffered major injuries, and first responders on scene tirelessly provided medical aid as he was transported to the University of California, Davis, Medical Center. Tragically, despite the valiant efforts of the paramedics and medical professionals, Officer Chellew succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1811 hours.

Officer Chellew was born on August 10, 1985 and was an eight-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol. He is survived by his wife, Christina; his son, Cameron; his daughter, Hadley; his mother, Marion; his father, Charles (CHP Captain, retired); and his sister, Hanna, (CHP Officer, ID 19617). Prior to joining the CHP, Officer Chellew proudly served in the United States Army.
